Day 221
June 12, 2020
A beautiful, crisp morning in the South Bay. This is just north of the Manhattan Beach pier. This LA neighborhood ranks as the 32nd most expensive place to live in the country. The median price per square foot is $943, making it the most expensive in Los Angeles. Earlier this year it was ranked the best place to live in the United States by 24/7 Wall Street.
The original residents of the area were most likely the Tongva people. In 1784 the Spanish crown deeded a large tract of land, over 75,000 acres, to a Spanish soldier. Over the next hundred years, the land changed hands a few times and in 1885 “Shore Acres” was established. Around 1902, the area became known as Manhattan, adding the “Beach” to the name of the city in 1927.
In 1912, George H. Peck, then owner of the northern portion of Manhattan, set aside a two block beach front area for the use of minority residents. It was developed into a beach resort for Black Americans by the Bruce family. Unfortunately, racism won out. In the 1920s, resort visitors and the black families that bought lots, were being attacked by the KKK. In 1924, the city seized the land, through Eminent Domain, to built a park. However, the property sat vacant for nearly forty years. Bayview Terrace Park was finally built in the 60’s. In 2007, the park was renamed Bruce’s Beach as an acknowledgment of the city’s history of intolerance.
