Day 166
April 18, 2020
Clearly I am making use of the courtyard to watch all the different feathered and furry friends that stop by for a drink. Or, in this little guy’s case, a drink and a peanut. For years, my neighbor has been inviting the squirrels into her apartment and they all get a peanut or two as parting gifts. There is nothing more entertaining than watching a squirrel march down her front steps, peanut in hand. Or paw, as it were.
Now this has often been met with resistance by some of the other folks that share the courtyard. My only issue with her chosen companions is that they often use my pots as storage and so they dig up my plants. I started using bone meal a few years ago to keep them away and that seems to have solved the problem. The other neighbors have kids and are concerned about disease the squirrels might bring into the courtyard. There is one neighbor in particular that has a lot of opinions, “conversations” have been had about it. I find the whole thing entertaining and largely stay out of it.
These days however, the poor squirrels have had to make do without the in-home visits. The neighbor is not allowing them in the door, though I’m sure they aren’t going to give her Covid-19, but what ever she’s comfortable with. So now, nuts are left on the steps for the squirrels to collect as they see fit. Everything is changing. Even the tiny squirrel world in my courtyard.
