My new obsession with buying flowers for my desk has extended to orchids. This blue beauty called to me from across the store. It is just the most gorgeously perfect flower. With varied shades of blue on the the petals, the the yellow detail on the lip, and the incredibly complex structure of the column, I just fell head over heels. it is truly a work of art.

Apparently orchids have been dated to 195 million years ago, the Mesozoic era. There are over 25,000 varieties and that number keeps growing. In the early 19th century, orchids became a huge collectors obsession that brought them to near extinction. Today there is a movement toward conservation in both native and greenhouse environments. As for this special, to me, specimen there are extended periods of staring, conversation, picture taking, and moisture checks. Hoping to keep this one going for some time.
