Day 203
May 25, 2020
Today is Memorial Day, the day we remember those who fought and died in military service for the freedoms of the American people. This holiday is normally celebrated with parades, visits to the graves of those who served, BBQ’s, trips to the beach, etc. It signifies the beginning of summer. This year all these things have gone from tricky to nearly impossible. Many celebrations were canceled and/or moved into the digital realm. But still, many, many people went to the beaches and parks, held BBQ’s and parties, and completely ignored the fact that we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Social media is replete with images of people enjoying themselves and not practicing social distancing or taking any other precautions. There is a very small part of me that is a bit jealous that they got to enjoy their holiday as they would have any other time. However, that is a very tiny part of me. I opted to forgo any major outing. No hiking, no running, no grocery store visits. I went for a walk and avoided any areas where I might encounter too many people. I have managed to keep myself healthy for nearly ten weeks and am not about to take any chances. But I do understand the need for socializing and some semblance of normalcy. I just wish them all the best of luck. There is no question many people will get sick, I just hope none get seriously ill. It’s the last thing our overly taxed medical systems need.
This image is of a Foribunda Rose. First introduced in the very early 20th century by a Danish breeder by the name of Dines Poulsen. It is a hybrid of Polyantha roses and Hybrid Teas. Yup, just looked all this up because until I came home with a photo of the reddest, or bluest, thing I came across (in honor of Memorial Day) during my walk today I had no idea this was a rose. I’ve seen them before but never looked into them. So now, I know more about roses than I ever did. A win! Hope you all had an enjoyable holiday, because we all know it was definitely memorable.
