I used to think the opening on this door was a spade. Like a playing card spade. But as I was taking the photo I realized it is missing the bottom section, the stem, if you will. Upon closer inspection, it’s more of an upside down heart. This made me ask Google what the meaning of an upside heart is and, well, it is apparently a symbol for testicles. This use of the inverted heart symbol dates back to the early Romans. Now, I don’t imagine my neighbor intended to display the symbol for testicles on their side gate, but who am I to judge if they did?
