Day 279
August 9, 2020
For some reason Waze thought that taking the 60 to the 10 would be the faster route, rather than the way it had me take on the way out. So the adventure back took me through interesting tiny towns. Lots and lots of Trump flags outside what looked like impromptu flea markets in desolate intersections. Saw lots of places I hadn’t seen before. Like the Salome Market, with really clean restrooms, in what seems like the middle of nowhere. US 60 runs right through the town of Salome, AZ, population 1,530 (as of 2010), possibly more today but still pretty small and quiet. However, the open spaces really made up for it. There are a few points of interest like The Little Roadside Chapel, Robson’s Ranch and Mining Camp – kind of a ghost town, and the Old Stage Stop. Sadly I did not stop at any of these places as I was ready to get home and seven hours is a really long drive to do on one’s own. Definitely on the list to stop there at some point again. Overall because of the smaller roads I took it was much more interesting drive back than the way out. I did, unfortunately, add forty five minutes to the trip as the Apple Fire was still burning and lots of local traffic was being rerouted to the 10. Fire season seems to be starting a bit early this year.
