Day 29
December 3, 2019
Heirloom tomatoes can be found at the grocery store year round. These beauties came from Mexico. And while they didn’t travel all that far, they aren’t exactly locally sourced. I did not buy any today because that is not why I was at the market. Regardless, I’m still conflicted about my personal consumption and my overall environmental footprint. We’ve all become so accustomed to having anything we want to eat at our fingertips, regardless of it being in season or what it took to get it to our local market. I have been trying to buy only locally grown produce, and I am lucky, living in a state where so much produce is grown. But where does that leave folks who live in states where there are real seasons? Where one can’t get an avocado in December, or a fresh tomato for that matter? What does locally sourced mean at the point? Adjusting to what is locally available is not so easy. While I am by no means the best example of such practices I do what I can and I can only hope others do as well.
