Day 302
September 1, 2020
I picked up this giant for my desk about a week ago. Hadn’t seen anything like it before. Turns out it is a King Protea. The largest in its genus, also known as a Giant Protea, Honeypot, or King Sugar Bush. It is naive to South Africa, and as such, their national flower. It also lends its name to the national cricket team, The Proteas. Fun fact, this flower is able to survive wild fires, it has an underground stem with dormant buds that produce more flowers after the fire.
